After performing on the same bill as Ed Ballon in July 2019, Dave Chapman, who performs and produces in the band, invited me to record a song of mine at the studio he works out of, Endless Noise, in Santa Monica, California.
I decided to record A Way Out, because it was one of the songs I knew I had to release next. We recorded the keys and vocals first, then the guitar, then the drums, and finally the bass. He mixed everything, mastered it, and at the end of our session gave me a copy of the song to listen to on my way home.
I was kind of disappointed with the end result at the time, because of how disjointed the song's timing was. I wished I had recorded drums first, or approached it differently, and felt like I had blown my one opportunity to record in a real studio in Los Angeles.
As time passed by, I learned to accept the way the recording came out, and eventually fell in love with it. I wanted at the time to not feel rushed by a metronome when recording the keys, and singing, and that desire gave the song a natural tempo, which has a distinctive human rhythm to it.
I still like the computer programmed version more, and feel like it's a truer representation of the song in its original form, but I wanted this version to be the B-side for this record, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
lyrics
If I ever
Find a way out
Would it matter
How it came about?
A way to
Forever
Be with you
I'd never
Wanna go back
When I see ya
Knowing there's just
Nothing better
I want you
However
You want to
Can I find it in myself
To be me and no one else
For the one that I want
To be with when I can't
Find it in anything else
Hoping in and of itself
Just won't do
I'll need to
Keep my cool
Surely to
Find a way out
A way out
A way out
